The Protection and Treasure of the Pilgrim.

The essence of the Way of Saint James is the religious dimension which it acquired over the centuries through the different devotions that appeared along the Way and, naturally, from the faith placed on the body of the Apostle.

This conviction, however, was also founded on the intense institutional support that the Way and pilgrimage received throughout their history; especially focused on the protection of pilgrims.

From the privilege granted by Alfonso IX of León to the pilgrims journeying to Santiago, around 1296, to the safe-conducts by Juan II of Castile or by the Catholic Kings, or the bull by Pope Julius II to the confraternity of the Apostle Saint James, many were the administrative and political measures that, in one way or another, guaranteed passing through territories that were not always safe and allowed pilgrims to be recognised and treated as such.

Pilgrimages Stories and Offers from Pilgrims.

Every journey in itself contains a story. Its beginning is the moment when the pilgrim sets off en route to Santiago and it does not end until he returns to his starting point. The Way, often seen only as a journey there, also involved the journey back, or the return.

Many pilgrims have left a testimony of their experience, of the vicissitudes suffered during their journey and of the emotions and feelings they accumulated.

Halfway between the guidebook and the adventure story pilgrims such as Nicola Albani, Domenico Laffi, Cosme de Medicis, the Rainha Santa, either in their own words, or through the voices of others, tell us what The Way was like. Suffice is to recall how in The Travels of Leo de Rozmital it says that when arriving at the church of Santiago his lord ordered the entire retinue to enter the temple barefoot.
