Cathedral of Tui: The Facades.

Today we will visit the facades of the Cathedral.

The North Façade:

It is located next to the City Hall. The doorway of the North Façade is of Romanesque style. The Bell Tower is beside it. The base of the Bell Tower is also of Romanesque style but its upper part was completed subsequently and it is of Gothic Style. The Tower of San Andrés or la Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower) is on the other side of the Bell Tower and it is also of Gothic style.

The Romanesque doorway: The figure of the Bishop San Epitacio, the first bishop of the Diocese of Tui, dominates it. There is a double arch over the doorway, a triple archivolt and the “mochetas” with figures of a bear and a wolf.

The East Facade:

It covers the apse of the church and the east side of the cloister on which is located the Episcopal Palace. The Romanesque Chapter Hall is also on this side of the cloister. The church had an originally Romanesque apse but it was replaced in the fifteenth century by what are today the Chapel of Santiago, the Main Altar and the Chapel of San Pedro.

The Chapel of San Telmo was built in the sixteenth century. It was extended in 1732. It is located beside the Chapel of San Pedro.

We can see to the left the tunnel called de la Misericordia beside the church with the same name. To the right we see the East Façade of the Cathedral. From right to left: the window of the sacristy, the rose window corresponds with the Chapel of Santiago located to the right of the Main Altar. The part of the Chapel of San Telmo which was extended in 1732 is located over the tunnel de la Misericordia.
