Visit to Sanctuary of Virgen de la Peregrina in Pontevedra. Part 2



We visit the inside of the chapel today.

A giant shell that is used as a holy water stoup stands out in the entrance portico. It was found and donated by the famous seaman Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez (1824-1868) in one of his sailings across the Pacific Ocean. The door that gains access to the choir and the two towers is beside the shell.





The vault in the entrance portico is a groin vault as the vault over the Altar.





Let´s go up to the choir.

This is the spiral staircase which gives access to the choir, to the high choir and to the south tower.





The central vault is seen from the choir.





View from the choir. It can be seen the curved shape of the Chapel floor plan. It has the shape of a scallop shell which is the symbol of the pilgrims. This makes it a unique monument. The style of the temple in the inside combines late Galician Baroque and Neoclassical.





This is a stained glass window in which a scallop shell crossed by two pilgrim sticks is represented.





Stained glass window decorated with floral motifs. It is situated in the choir. It is seen from the outside over the arch which in turn is over the main door.





The choir is over the entrance door.





This is the central vault of the chapel.





The Main Altarpiece is Neoclassical style, it is of 1789.

The Altar. The relief of the Flight into Egypt (which represents the Holy Family) in the upper part of the altar is of great interest.





This is one of the three angels who accompany the statue of the Virgin.





There are two sacristies, on both sides of the Altar.

The vault over the Altar is a groin vault as the vault in the entrance portico.





It can be seen the curved shape of the Chapel floor plan.





This pew has the pilgrim emblem, a scallop shell crossed by two pilgrim sticks.





The lamp is made of glass and it has thirty-six arms. It was donated in it is of 1876.





And this is the end of the visit. We see the atrium from inside the portico entrance and the statue depicting Teucro with a cross.
