Bueu Seafront, Ría de Pontevedra. Part 1




Today we will take a walk along the seafront of Bueu, between Petís Beach and Banda do Río Beach, walking down Montero Ríos Avenue and Pescadoira Beach. We will also visit the Port which is very important for the economic life of the town.

Bueu is a municipality of about 12000 inhabitants. It belongs to the region called O Morrazo. It is situated on the southern bank of the Ría de Pontevedra. It has the characteristic that one third of its territory is of insular nature. The beautiful island called Ons is part of National Park Illas Atlánticas.

The economic life of the town revolves around fishing both inshore and deep-sea fishing. Artisanal octopus fishing also highlights. Fishermen Guild of Bueu has created a quality label to protect that fishing gear.


This is an explanatory panel in the fishing dock next to Banda do Ría Beach. It refers to quality label called Polbo das Rías (´Octopus caught in the Rías´). Fishing gear is explained. Pot is to catch octopus traditional way. An identifying label guarantees the quality of the product.

There were more than 30 salted fish factories in Bueu and booming canning industry. There were very important companies at national and international level. Today Massó Museum is the witness which brings us closer to the past: fishing gear, tools for shell fishing, auxiliary activities as carpentry and manufacture of fishing nets, old machinery for canning and even tools coming from old whalers.

Bueu also has a high tourist attraction. There are over 20 coves and beaches in its coastline. Lapamán, Agrelo, Portomaior, Loureiro, Beluso, Tuia, Mourisca, Lagos and Area de Bon highlight and also natural environment Cabo Udra, protected by the Natura 2000 network.





In addition, Bueu has a rich heritage (civil and religious): pazos (they are stately homes, typical of Galicia and they are usually located in rural areas), chapels and churches. Romanesque Church Santa María de Cela highlight among them.

The division into parishes remains in Galicia and it is very important. They are civil parishes and are of ecclesiastical origin. Bueu is divided into the following parishes: Santa María de Beluso, San Martiño de Bueu and Santa María de Cela.
