Way of Saint James. From Triacastela to Samos. Part 3.

Part 3 of this section of the Way between Triacastela and Samos begins in Freituxe. We will pass by San Martiño do Real and its Romanesque church and reach the place from which the Monastery of Samos can be seen. The Way of Saint James in winter.

This is the Church of the Virgen de la Salud (Our Lady of Health) in Freituxe. The origins of this small village date back to the 8th century subsequently becoming dependent of the Monastery of Samos.

We cross the village and continue the Way. Freituxe leaves behind.

We continue to move toward our next destination, San Martiño do Real, about one kilometre away. The Way takes a slight slope.

The yellow arrow guides us once again in this bend in the Way.

We arrive at this point where the Way turns suddenly to the left to go down to the River Oribio (also called Sarria) in a steep descent. Just behind those trees the village of San Martiño do Real and its church is barely visible.

The church of San Martiño is hidden for now behind the vegetation.

42.739017, -7.314557

The descent of about 100 metres requires attention because the slate stone is slippery.

42.738853, -7.314525

We stop a moment in the middle of the slope and see San Martiño and the river.

42.738700, -7.314441

This house seems to be inhabited.

Arriving at San Martiño do Real, we are situated only 150 meters from the church, on the bridge that crosses the River Oribio. In these days of heavy snowfalls on January the river is quite full and overflows a little. Next to the trees to the right of the picture the Regato de Vilar flows into the Oribio (also called…).

We look downstream from the bridge. We can see another small water jump in the river and the church of San Martiño in the background.

Once we have passed the bridge the river is on our right.

42.737281, -7.314247

This is called the Regato de Vilar. We can see to the right of the picture the River Oribio in which the Regato de Vilar flows into.

42.737234, -7.313960

Here after crossing the bridge the Way turns to the right as just mentioned, leaving the river to that side. Now a small uphill leads us to the place where the Church of San Martiño is.

42.737187, -7.314196

A few steps further on.

42.737299, -7.314518

We look to our right and see the river through the vegetation.

We arrive at the Church of San Martiño do Real. It is a Romanesque church in which the corbels with human and animal (rams or horses) figures highlight. It is made of slate masonry the roof has the typical slate slabs characteristics of the area.

42.737995, -7.315844

We leave behind the church and continue walking, leaving the houses of San Martiño on the left. The Way ascends with a slight slope throughout this section to return to the LU-633 road.

42.736603, -7.316638

Here the Way turns to the right. We walk about 300 metres from here and arrive at the small tunnel which passes under the road LU-633.

42.736471, -7.316600

The tunnel.

42.735716, -7.319355

We cross the tunnel and when leaving in the background we see the sign to turn left and start the descent path to Samos.

42.735351, -7.319819

We leave the tunnel behind.

42.735364, -7.320250

This is the sign to turn left to continue the Way. We are at the junction of the road LU-633 with the road LU-P-5601.

42.735407, -7.320389

Now we will cross the LU-P-5601 road.

42.735225, -7.320853

Once we have crossed the road LU-P-5601 we continue walking.

42.735062, -7.321274

The Way begins to descend and approaches the place where Samos is already seen for the first time.

42.734386, -7.322074

This is the place from where pilgrims see for the first time the Monastery of Samos, to the right of the picture, and take pictures from this unforgettable place. The Way continues to descend as can be seen on the left.

42.733857, -7.322688

We come out to look.

Here ends our story about the section of the Way of Saint James between Triacastela and Samos.

We will see in a subsequent chapter the descent toward Samos, the Monastery and more places.

The End.
