Today we visit Portocelo Beach. It is located a little more than 1 kilometre from the center of Marín.

Marín is a municipality of about 26000 inhabitants. It is situated on the southern bank of the Ría de Pontevedra. There is a strong historical link with the sea, also nowadays its important fishing and commercial port around which the economic life of the town revolves, without forgetting the marina and the military port.

We start our walk beside the Escuela Naval just 300 meters from Portocelo Beach.

Since the Escuela Naval Militar (Military Naval School) settled in Marín in 1943 many generations of naval officers have been educated here.

The hiking route called Ruta de las Playas (Beaches Route) has a distance of 8.5 kilometres along the coastline of the municipality. It begins beside the Naval School and continues towards the beaches of Portocelo, Mogor, Aguete, Loira, ending on the beach of O Santo.

Spectacular views of the Ría de Pontevedra can be enjoyed along the entire route. The route has a bike path along a large part of it.

Tambo Island is located in the center of the Ria de Pontevedra. Throughout its eventful history it has known many events among which we emphasize:

In the seventh century San Fructuoso founded a monastery on an existing hermitage. In the Middle Ages the Benedictine Monastery is dedicated to Santa Maria de Gracia.

In 1589 the island is razed by the English pirate Francis Drake. The statue of Santa María de Gracia is picked up and guarded by fishermen until the Chapel of the Virgen de A Renda is built, the place where it is nowadays.

In 1865 the island becomes a lazaretto. The State subsequently takes ownership to build a prison.

In 1943 the Naval School in Marín was opened and the island was used as an arsenal and gunpowder warehouse.

In 2002 the Navy demilitarizes Tambo and its ownership is returned to Poio, though it cannot be visited.

It seems that the sky is clearing a little.
